As others have stated, backfiring occurs when unburned fuel/air mixture enters the exhaust system then detonates. It's a common occurance in large single cylinder engines and is due to the lack of back pressure in the exhaust system. Multi cylinder engines maintain back pressure because the release of exhaust gases occurs more often, keeping the pressure up. Smaller single cylinder engines (mostly dirt bikes) maintain back pressure because they run at higher RPM so that the release of exhaust gases occurs more often and because their exhaust systems are designed to be more restrictive, slowing the flow of exhaust and maintaining higher pressure. Harley Davidson engines with straight (shorty) pipes also backfire a lot.
